If you're weighing a Roth individual retirement account conversion, you could save on taxes by leveraging a limited window of time, experts say. Roth conversions transfer pretax or nondeductible IRA money to a Roth IRA, which kickstarts future tax-free growth. After you stop working, but before you start required withdrawals from retirement accounts, is "the sweet spot" for Roth conversions, according to JoAnn May, a Berwyn, Illinois-based certified financial planner at Forest Asset Management. Plus, many investors want to leverage lower income tax brackets through 2025 before provisions could sunset from former President Donald Trump's signature tax overhaul, she said. After a Roth conversion, you'll owe regular income taxes on the converted amount.

Inherited individual retirement accounts can be a financial boost for heirs, but the windfall can trigger tax issues, experts say. Withdrawals from pretax inherited IRAs incur regular income taxes. Since 2020, certain heirs can no longer "stretch" retirement account distributions over their lifetime to reduce yearly taxes. Now, certain heirs, including most adult children, must deplete inherited accounts within 10 years, known as the "10-year rule." While only about 20% of May's clients have inherited IRAs, she expects more heirs to face the tax-planning issue as baby boomers age.

If you've opted into your employer's Roth 401(k) after-tax matching contributions this year, it could trigger a tax surprise without proper planning, experts say. Enacted in 2022, Secure 2.0 ushered in sweeping changes for retirement savers, including the option for employers to offer 401(k) matches in Roth accounts. Previously Roth 401(k) matches went into pretax accounts. However, those new matching Roth contributions could have "unintended consequences" at tax time, according to Tommy Lucas, a certified financial planner and enrolled agent at Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo in Orlando, Florida. Eva-katalin | E+ | Getty ImagesIt is common folklore, a fairy tale of sorts, that middle-class Americans received perpetual relief in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. First, property taxes generate 32% of state and local income, and U.S. median single-family home property taxes have risen by more than 25% since 2019. Congress will be motivated to etch all the tax cuts in stone, but it would only add fuel to the debt bonfire. watch nowThere is also the qualified business income deduction that offers a 20% tax break for small businesses provided they are below certain income thresholds. 10'000 Hours | Digitalvision | Getty ImagesThere's still time to lower your 2023 tax bill or boost your refund with a lesser-known retirement savings strategy for married couples. One requirement for individual retirement account contributions is "earned income," such as wages or salary from a job or self-employment earnings. But there's an exception for single-income households: the spousal IRA. With income phaseouts for IRA deductibility and Roth IRA contributions, many wait until March or April for the previous year's IRA deposits. Even a $500 or $1,000 spousal IRA contribution could provide tax savings.

After 65, you can use your HSA money to cover any expense without incurring a penalty, but the funds are subject to income tax. I happily used my HSA money to cover the $1,075 bill. An even smarter move would have been to invest my HSA funds (which I eventually did) and not touch them until age 65. I was relieved when Weiss told me that he also invests his HSA money in a retirement date fund. I asked about how often I should be transferring money from my cash account, where my HSA funds land automatically, to my investment account.

American Airlines said Monday that 80% of its revenue this year will come from loyalty program members and passengers in premium cabins like business class, up from 70% in 2017. American and other carriers have poured billions of dollars into new cabins, lounges and onboard upgrades to cater to high-spending travelers. American's rival Delta Air Lines has repeatedly said that premium revenue growth has become a bigger share of its overall sales and is growing faster than ticket sales in the coach cabin. American earlier on Monday said it was ordering 260 new Boeing , Airbus and Embraer planes to revamp its fleet and that it would retrofit older Airbus planes to increase the size of their first-class cabins. Now, as a tax reporter for CNBC, I focus on tax strategy all year, including how retirement contribution decisions may affect long-term plans. Pretax vs. Roth retirement contributionsOne of the biggest questions from investors is whether to save money into a pretax or after-tax Roth account. Early in my career, I focused on Roth savings, which made sense with lower income and decades until retirement. I've prioritized my employer match with pretax and Roth 401(k) deferrals, while also making Roth individual retirement account contributions. There's also a small nest egg in my health savings account, which I added to during my years of self-employment.

Standard Chartered on Friday reported 2023 pre-tax profit rose 18%, in line with forecasts, and rewarded shareholders with a $1 billion share buyback and a jump in dividend. StanChart , which earns most of its revenue in Asia, said statutory pretax profit for 2023 reached $5.09 billion, in line with $5.1 billion from 15 analyst estimates compiled by the bank. A fresh $150 million writedown of its stake in Bohai Bank, following a $700 million hit earlier this year, reduced its value to $700 million from $1.5 billion at the start of the year. StanChart said banking industry challenges and the uncertainty swirling around the property market were to blame for the decline in the stake's current value. The London-headquartered lender also announced a final dividend of $560 million or 21 cents per share, resulting in a 50% increase of full year dividend payout to 27 cents, greater than a consensus view of 23.7 cents.
